Antonio Guterres: “2011 has been a year of displacement crises unlike any other I have seen in my time as High Commissioner”

Although the number of refugees seeking asylum in industrialized countries has risen by 17%, the BBC reports, that increase is less than what many expected in light of the Arab Spring revolutions and uprisings. Neighboring countries appear to be bearing much of the burden. Moreover, most asylum seekers are still coming from Afghanistan (15,300 applications for resettlement so far this year) and China (11,700), two nations which have historically produced large numbers of refugees.

The United States remains the number one destination for asylum seekers fleeing persecution.
