Iraqis who originally fled to Syria during the height of the civil war are now being forced back to Iraq, where they are greeted by more insecurity violence, the BBC reports. One IRAP clients report that, faced with the decision to remain in Syria or flee back to Iraq, he would “rather die at home.”
While Iraqis who had already been referred by the UN to the US when the Embassy closed may continue the program in Iraq, those who were not among the few to be referred return to Iraq with no options at all, becoming Internally Displaced Persons. The U.S. does not currently have a plan for assisting or resettling IDP’s inside Iraq.
