In February 2026, the International Refugee Assistance Project Europe (IRAP Europe) co-hosted with Synergies Migrations, the International Catholic Migration Commission Europe/Share Network, the Fédération de l’Entraide Protestante and the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) and MPI Europe, a two-day roundtable in Paris.
Titled “Refugee Protection in the Time of Global Turmoil: a Roundtable to Shape the Future of Safe and Legal Pathways”, the roundtable brought together over 80 participants from 15 different countries and EU-/global-level actors, including policy and legal experts, researchers, NGOs, and state representatives, for in-depth discussions on the future of legal pathways amid growing challenges to the global refugee protection system.
IRAP Europe contributed its expertise to the discussion through Kristine Rembach, IRAP Europe’s Director, and Nadia Sebtaoui, Supervising Attorney of IRAP Europe’s France and United Kingdom team, who participated as panelists in discussions about legal challenges refugees face in accessing resettlement and complementary pathways, the potential impacts of strategic litigation in the context of pathways, and effective strategies for data collection, advocacy, and litigation to counter current attacks on family reunification in Europe.
IRAP Europe has published the following policy briefs summarising the discussions and recommendations arising from the panels in which we took part. As the roundtable was conducted under the Chatham House Rule, these policy briefs aim to frame the core discussions on each topic in a non-attributable manner.
