Following the segment about Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) on HBO’s Last Week Tonight, a blog piece published by the Council on Foreign Relations asks: why is a comedian the only one talking about this?
The authors, Janine Davidson and Emerson Brooking, explore both what enabled the SIV program in Afghanistan to become “stuck in a bureaucratic swamp” and what can be done now to make good. They insist on the need for Congress to extend the SIV program in Afghanistan.
“These Afghans have put everything at risk to aid U.S. servicemen, arguably investing more than anyone else in the vision of a free and democratic Afghanistan,” they write. “To fail them now would not only be a breach of faith—it would also signal to future would-be allies that the United States’ word is not to be trusted and that they help us at their peril. We can do better than this, and we must.”
