In honor of World Refugee Day, IRAP is proud to be involved in initiatives calling for action to support the growing number of refugees around the world. During a time when the basic legal and human rights of refugees are being challenged, World Refugee Day reminds us to continue to take action and hold our leaders accountable to protect the world’s most vulnerable.
On Friday, June 16, IRAP joined the month-long Letter-a-Day Campaign, in collaboration with Refugee Council USA, urging our members of Congress to support refugee protection and resettlement. The letter was signed by roughly 100 IRAP law student volunteers from across the country and was distributed to every congressional office.
IRAP is also proud to be co-sponsoring the “World Refugee Day Rally at the White House” on June 20 from 5 pm – 6:30 pm EST at Lafayette Park in Washington, D.C., along with over 60 other participating human rights organizations and resettlement agencies. The event will bring together refugees and asylum speakers, faith leaders, legal experts, business leaders, and advocates to show support and solidarity for refugee communities.
Finally, at 7 pm, IRAP will be participating in a film screening of After Spring, a feature documentary that focuses on the Syrian refugee crisis while highlighting two families living in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. The event will take place at the US Capitol Building where Mac McEachin, IRAP’s National Security Policy Associate, will be featured in a post-screening Q & A discussion with other representatives from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the filmmakers.
