IRAP REACTS TO BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCEMENT THAT U.S. INTENDS TO WELCOME 100,000 UKRAINIAN REFUGEES
(New York, NY) – Today, the Biden administration announced its intention to “welcome up to 100,000 Ukrainians and others fleeing Russia’s aggression through the full range of legal pathways, including the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program… with a focus on welcoming Ukrainians who have family members in the United States.”
The following is a quote from Sunil Varghese, Policy Director at the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP):
“IRAP welcomes the announcement to extend refugee protection to vulnerable Ukrainians. The Biden administration is right to respond to the crisis in Ukraine with compassion and bold action, and should extend the same approach to displacement crises around the world.
Unfortunately, refugee resettlement continues at a glacial pace, and significant investments and innovations are required to ensure the Biden administration’s intentions can be made reality. We look forward to receiving more details about the program to protect vulnerable Ukrainians and encourage the administration to issue a clear plan to fulfill its promise to rebuild the refugee admissions program as a whole.”
