Voice of America: UN Fears Mass Iraqi Refugee Exodus

The United Nations has begun planning for the imminent destabilization of the current nation of Iraq and is making preparations to deal with the expected humanitarian crisis, according to the Voice of America. Estimates place the number of Iraqis who have been displaced from their homes at over 1 million, and hundreds of thousands more are expected. So far, aid to Iraq has been minimal, because of the sheer speed with which the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant took over Iraqi territory. Though many agencies have begun sending food, water, medicine, and other essential supplies, nations and NGO’s alike are admittedly wary of sending their employees into a war zone.

Meanwhile, the United States has not developed any solutions to its visa and refugee application backlogs, which have been compounded by the nation’s evacuation of non-essential personnel. Obviously, these people should not be placed in danger either – but our government must find a way to help our Iraqi allies who are once again in extreme peril.
