FOLLOWING ELECTION, IRAP VOWS TO DEFEND IMMIGRANT RIGHTS AGAINST TRUMP ATTACKS
(New York, NY) – In response to the election of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States, Sharif Aly, President of the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), issued the following statement:
“It is impossible to overstate the danger these election results represent for people seeking safety. The pain and devastation President-elect Trump inflicted on immigrant communities and families in his first term is still fresh in our memories, and his second term could be just as difficult – if not more – for our clients and our communities.
Xenophobia has no place in our country, and we are ready to push back immediately and strategically against the Trump administration’s expected efforts to codify anti-immigrant hate, criminalize seeking safety, and push forcibly displaced people into even more dangerous and precarious circumstances.
We hoped to never be here again, but we’ve been preparing for this possibility. We are not afraid and we are not naive. We are ready to use every tool in our toolbox to uphold the rights and dignity of people seeking safety, and to fight for a more welcoming future for all.”
The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a global legal aid and advocacy organization working to create a world where refugees and all people seeking safety are empowered to claim their right to freedom of movement and a path to lasting refuge. Everyone should have a safe place to live and a safe way to get there.
