IRAP CALLS ON WHITE HOUSE TO REINSTATE TEMPORARY PROTECTIONS FOR AFGHANS AND CAMEROONIANS

(New York, NY) In response to the decision by the Department of Homeland Security to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of Afghans and Cameroonians in the United States, Hannah Flamm, Interim Senior Director of Policy at the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), issued the following statement:

“It’s horrifying for the administration to claim that conditions in Afghanistan and Cameroon no longer warrant temporary protections for those who have sought safety in the United States. At a time when extreme human rights violations and violence pervade both countries, this egregious decision risks the forced return of thousands of vulnerable people and the tearing apart of families and communities. The Trump administration should reconsider its decision and reinstate protections for these groups, as well as nationals of other countries where it is not safe for them to return.”

The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a global legal aid and advocacy organization working to create a world where refugees and all people seeking safety are empowered to claim their right to freedom of movement and a path to lasting refuge. Everyone should have a safe place to live and a safe way to get there.
