IRAP LAUNCHES NEW RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM WITH UK HOME OFFICE FOR VULNERABLE PALESTINIANS
IRAP will work as a referral partner to identify Palestinian refugees with urgent protection needs
(New York, NY) – Today, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), announced the launch of a partnership with the United Kingdom (UK) Home Office to refer vulnerable Palestinian refugees living in Jordan and Lebanon for resettlement in the UK.
Beginning this week, IRAP will work alongside partner organizations to identify eligible Palestinians for referral to the newly-reopened UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS). After identifying potential eligible applicants by verified partners in both countries, IRAP will conduct interviews to explore individual protection and resettlement needs. IRAP will then refer applicants to the UK government who will make a final decision on resettlement to the UK.
“At a moment when doors to safety are closing for refugees around the world, the UK’s decision to reopen resettlement referrals represents a vital lifeline for those who need it most,” said IRAP Senior VP, Global Legal Programs, Kathleen Norland List. “For Palestinian families with nowhere left to turn, having a safe and legal resettlement option is life changing. It’s the difference between waiting in danger and a new chance at safety. IRAP is grateful to be partnering with the UK Home Office to help identify refugees who need this protection the most urgently. This program demonstrates it is possible to expand access to resettlement to refugees for whom it was previously out of reach, and we look forward to building on that success with the UK and other governments.”
Background
Palestinian refugees have historically been excluded from resettlement pathways. This first-of-its-kind program bridges that gap to ensure the most vulnerable Palestinians have an avenue to safety in the UK. Participation in the program is entirely voluntary and does not in any way infringe on Palestinian Right of Return to historic Palestine, as stated in United Nations General Resolution 194.
