IRAP SHOCKED BY SUPREME COURT RULING REINSTATING INHUMANE REMAIN IN MEXICO POLICY, CALLS ON BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO TERMINATE POLICY AND REVOKE TITLE 42
(New York, NY) – Last night, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed a lower court decision effectively reinstating the Migration Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as Remain in Mexico. The ruling came despite overwhelming evidence that MPP contradicts international human rights law and puts asylum seekers at heightened risk of violence, extortion, and murder while they are forced to wait in Mexico.
Carmen Maria Rey, U.S. Legal Director of the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), responded to the decision:
“It is unconscionable that the Supreme Court would force the government to reinstate the illegal Remain in Mexico program. Not only does Remain in Mexico make a mockery of due process, it literally puts migrant lives in danger. IRAP calls on the Biden administration to immediately renew its efforts to terminate this policy and restore full access to the asylum system by revoking Title 42, another remnant of the xenophobic Trump-era that continues to push migrants into harm’s way in Mexico. The Biden administration must use this moment to recommit to restoring a humane asylum system and not use the Supreme Court’s ill-advised decision to give cover to inhumane and illegal policies.”
