IRAP STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW U.S. STRATEGY IN AFGHANISTAN
(New York, NY) – In response to last night’s announcement by President Trump to increase troop levels in Afghanistan, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) at the Urban Justice Center issued the following statement:
“The President’s decision to increase troop levels and remain indefinitely in Afghanistan underscores the intense need for a robust and continually funded visa program for our allies. Since we will continue to require help from the local population with interpretation and other services on the ground, we have a responsibility to protect the lives of those who risk everything to do so. IRAP urges the President to provide sufficient visas for Afghan and Iraqi allies and to continue resettling refugees, many of whom are Iraqis with ties to the United States. Not only will this strategy bring relief to many families in life-threatening danger, but it will also bolster our missions in Iraq and Afghanistan by ensuring that we have capable and trustworthy allies in the fight against ISIS and the Taliban.”
