“Beyond the Pale” – IRAP Denounces Trump Plan to Expand Detention of Migrants at Guantánamo Bay

Yesterday, President Trump signed a memo directing the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to expand the Guantánamo Migrant Operations Center (GMOC) at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, signaling in a speech an intent to detain up to 30,000 people there. This would be the first time since the 1990s that the U.S. government would use Guantánamo to detain immigrants at this scale, and the first time ever the facility would be used to detain people already present in the United States.

Eight Years After the Muslim Ban, IRAP Continues Fight

Eight years ago today, on January 27, 2017, a newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump signed his infamous Muslim ban executive order, affecting thousands of travelers whose permission to enter the United States was revoked while they were already on airplanes and in transit. IRAP was proud to be at the forefront of the fight against the ban, recruiting thousands of attorneys and everyday Americans to airports around the country to push back against the discriminatory and illegal act and to instead stand up for the rights and dignity of all people seeking safety.

Last night, reporting by the New York Times revealed new Trump administration actions seeking to terminate parole programs and people’s parole status and to subject parolees to a fast-track deportation process. This includes Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who arrived legally in the United States as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to expand legal pathways for family reunification and humanitarian reasons, as well as people who entered the country lawfully via appointments obtained through the CBP One app in order to seek humanitarian protection.

“Political Cowardice”: IRAP Denounces Passage of Laken Riley Act

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the amended Senate version of the Laken Riley Act. All House Republicans and 46 House Democrats voted for the bill, which received support from all Senate Republicans and 12 Senate Democrats. The anti-immigrant legislation is expected to be the first bill to be signed into law since President Trump’s inauguration.

IRAP Condemns Announced Trump Immigration Executive Orders, Vows to Continue “Fight for a More Welcoming Future for All”

Today, the White House announced that newly-inaugurated President Trump will sign a slew of executive actions attacking the rights and humanity of immigrants and eviscerating the asylum and refugee systems. These include temporarily suspending refugee resettlement and initiating the reinstatement of the “Remain in Mexico” program to push asylum seekers back into danger, among others. IRAP strongly condemns these orders, many of which would be unlawful and have devastating effects on refugees, immigrants, and the country as a whole. IRAP vows to continue fighting against these disastrous policies.
